Four students have been chosen to represent the UK at 2024 International Biology Olympiad, taking place in Astana, Kazakhstan.
The students selected are:
- Joaquin Anjarwalla from Latymer Upper School
- Nikolaos Argyropoulos from Reading School
- Poppy Pendergast from Beaulieu Convent School
- Emily Wong from Colchester County High School for Girls
The team of four were chosen at the University of Warwick from sixteen finalists (listed below) who were selected from the highest scoring students of the British Biology Olympiad. The students were examined at Warwick on a variety of bioscience skills including micro pipetting, dissection and bioinformatics. These tasks were organised by the university’s School of Life Sciences team and led by Dr Sophie Martucci and Dr Christine Lockey.
Dr Matthew Johnston, UKBC Chair, congratulated this year’s team and thanked the 16 finalists. He also expressed his thanks and gratitude to Dr Martucci, Dr Lockey, and the University of Warwick Life Sciences department for their continued support of the competitions.
The team of four will be flying out to Astana in July for the International Biology Olympiad, now in its 35th year, where they will compete with pre-university students from over 80 countries in a series of practical tasks from Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics and Animal anatomy and physiology, and written exams.
Congratulations to the 16 Finalists!
