The 37th International Biology Olympiad was held in Vilnius, Lithuania from the 12th to 19th July, 2026. A huge well done to the UK team who were all awarded medals!
Claire Delaney (Solihull School), Daniel Ward (Royal Grammar School Guildford), Oliver Jing (Winchester College) received silver medals, and Ellie Bloxam (Kendrick School) received a bronze medal.
302 students from 78 countries took part, with 12 hours of theoretical and practical exams covering animal physiology, molecular biology and biochemistry, animal morphology and systematics, and plant computational biology. The UK team were selected from over 18000 students who entered the British Biology Olympiad.
The students also had a varied social programme including a visit to Trakai, discussions with Lithuanian life sciences start-ups and innovators, and a visit to Vilnius University Botanical Gardens.
In 2027 the 38th IBO will take place in Warsaw, Poland. Find out more about the international competition on the IBO website.
