The beauty of the competitions is they inspire interest, reward wider reading and while the advantages of doing well are numerous there is no downside to doing badly. This encourages students to have a go and while they are challenging this mode is also highly supportive.

United Kingdom Biology Competitions is a registered charity that inspires and encourages biology education. We currently provide three annual exams for schools, which are free to UK schools. Join over 1,000 other schools and 75,000 students!

  • Biology Challenge – a competition for 13-15 year olds – questions include topics covered in school, problem-solving and general knowledge of natural history. 60% of students are awarded certificates.
  • Intermediate Biology Olympiad – for first year of post-16 education – advanced biological problem solving rewarded with a prestigious certificate for higher education applications. Winners also can ballot to attend a free FSC field course.
  • British Biology Olympiad – for those in post-16 education – stretching biological questions giving students access to a breadth of beyond A-level topics. Gold-medaling students can be selected to take part in the International Olympiad with >70 countries. Recommended by the University of Cambridge.
